Many people cycle in the UK all year round, but during autumn and winter there are a few extra things to remember, to stay safe on the road.
From October to February, the weather is more unpredictable, it’s much colder on the road, and it gets dark a lot earlier – so please read the following advice…
Using your Bike Lights
It gets dark very early in the winter – so make sure that you have your lights with you, whenever you take your bike out for a ride (even if you’re going out in the morning).
It is against the law in the UK to ride your bike without lights on public roads when it is dark.
⚪ Your WHITE LIGHT should always be attached to the front of your bike
🔴 Your RED LIGHT should always be attached to the rear of your bike
🦺 Wear bright or high-visibility clothes so you can be seen more easily by other road users
Cycling in Parks
Parks are a great place to go to improve your cycling confidence, and get the most enjoyment from riding your bike. But at this time of year, please remember…
🚧 Parks usually close a lot earlier in the autumn and winter months
🕓 Check the opening and closing times of your local park before you cycle there so you don’t get locked in.
Wet Weather
It’s important to stay safe, especially in challenging weather conditions. Wet roads can make cycling more dangerous, so taking extra care will help you avoid accidents and ride confidently…
☔ Slow down on wet roads, as they can be slippery
🍂 Avoid riding over wet leaves, grass, mud or painted lines
↩️ Take corners more slowly when the roads are wet and give yourself more time and space to brake
Cycling in Ice or Snow
It does occasionally snow in the UK, and riding in icy or snowy conditions can be dangerous and should be avoided unless absolutely neccessary.
If you do choose to cycle…
🛣️ Stick to main roads where possible as they’re more likely to have been gritted or salted.
🐌 Start riding slowly – you can always get off a walk if needs be!
Looking after your bike
You may not ride your bike as often in autumn and winter, so please take extra care to make sure your bike is safe and less likely to be stolen…
🔑 Please ask if you can keep your bike indoors at your accommodation. It will be far more secure, and will keep it safe from weather damage.
🔒 If you must store your bike outside, check on it regularly and change where you lock it up to reduce the chance of it being stolen.
