Meet a local cyclist in your area

Are you new to your city? Or are you new to your bike? Do you want someone friendly to go on rides with?

By joining Bike Buddies, you will meet a confident cyclist who lives near your home. There are many things a Buddy can help you with! For example:

  • They can go to new places with you.
  • Help you plan and try out new paths to places you want to go.
  • Explain the rules of roads in the UK.
  • Boost your confidence in cycling on roads.
  • Help you check if your bike is safe before a ride.
  • Show you calm routes and bike paths in your area

You will plan the date and time of your rides with your Buddy at a time that suits you. The goal is to go on three rides together. The rides can be easy or difficult, in parks or on roads – it is up to you!

To join, you need to be 18 years of age or over and meet our eligibility criteria.  You can sign up by emailing us at  bikebuddies@thebikeproject.co.uk

Elisse and Rawand

Elisse and Rawand became Bike Buddies at the end of 2021. They went on many bike rides together, visited art galleries, and now they are very good friends. (Read the full interview on our blog.)

I got my bike in November last year which became a friend for me to make my activities much easier. My life changed through having a bike as I could do more activities and also visit different places which are a little bit difficult to walk.

My favourite thing about Bike Buddies is you feel that you have friends through sports. Also, they are someone that encourages you to cycle more and supports you with that, teaching you some life skills. – Rawand

Jack and Saad

Saad received his bike from us in June 2019 and when he found out about the Bike Buddies programme, was immediately interested in taking part. He said:

“I wanted to experience it and found it interesting. With a volunteer, I can discover places calmly and it gives you vitality when riding a bike.

Bike Buddies volunteer, Jack, was equally as excited to take part:

“I found out about The Bike Project through Twitter, and I applied to the Bike Buddies scheme after seeing a particular tweet about there being a small number of places left on the training day. After a great day of training with other volunteers, I was hugely excited to get started and meet my first bike buddy.”

Through this befriending programme, we have matched over 300 refugees with local cyclists in their area!
