Volunteer Spotlight: Vicky Carnegy

Giving a bike to someone may seem a small thing to do but it can transform a life, especially when you are struggling on a tiny budget.

Meet Vicky…a dedicated and committed part of The Bike Project team for years. Having worked in cycling since 1997, Vicky joined The Bike Project as a cycling instructor in Pedal Power and now supports our donation sessions.

Vicky describes herself as “one of the volunteers doing the most fun bit. We hand out the bicycles at the donation sessions. Everyone also gets a bag of fab accessories as well. It’s great fun especially when families come. And of course everyone loves to get a bicycle. We have lots of support from staffers who fix any problems. It really is a highpoint of my week.”

Why is volunteering an important thing to do?

Volunteering is important for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes I think we forget that it gives back to the volunteers as well as recipients. You become part of a community and quite often you’ll meet people outside your normal circles. It can be a way into employment, a way to make friends, to learn something new and to have fun!

What is your favourite things about volunteering for The Bike Project?

My favourite thing is all the people – the recipients who travel miles to get a bike and, of course, the lovely Bike Project staff and other volunteers.

Why do you think the work The Bike Project does is important?

Giving a bike to someone may seem a small thing to do but it can transform a life, especially when you are struggling on a tiny budget. I really do think that you feel more independent and connected to your city when riding a bike. Of course The Bike Project supports in lots of ways after people have their bike. Some want this, others are just happy to ride off.

Thank you Vicky for all your support over the years. It is really appreciated.
