It hasn’t become any easier being a refugee in the UK in 2018, but here at The Bike Project we’re proud of the work that we’ve done to get refugees cycling this year.
Thanks to your amazing support, we’ve helped about a thousand more refugees and asylum seekers make the most of London with their own pedal-powered transportation.
Here are some of our other good news highlights, picked by members of the team.
Jem, CEO and Founder
Winning a National Lottery Award was a definite high point this year. It’s brilliant to have our work recognised by a public vote. Louis Theroux presented us with our award – and ended up donating us his old bike, as well as buying a new one from our shop!
Nicola, Operations Manager
For me, seeing one of our Pedal Power graduates go on to complete her National Standard cycle instructor course was a real highlight. She now volunteers for us, teaching other refugee women to cycle on our Pedal Power course.
Anna, Marketing Manager
Selling out the Union Chapel in June for our annual comedy event, thanks to a great line-up led by Sara Pascoe, was one of my favourite moments. We’re already planning Jokes & Spokes 2019 – it’s such a fun fundraising fixture in our year!
Charlie, Logistics & Cycle Instruction
This year we added our 20th Bike Hub drop off point for donations. Donated bikes are the lifeblood of what we do, and it’s really important we make it as easy to donate as possible. To all the generous folks who have lent us space at their church/office/community centre – chapeau!
Callum, Head Mechanic
This year, I went from working as a freelancer to joining the team in the shiny new workshop in Deptford. Now I love coming into work every day, helping put refurbished bikes into the hands of people who really need them.
